My New Toy

I finally bought a laptop. TCL, 1.5Hrz, 516MB, 60G. Less than 6000rmb. The Windows is in English. MSOffice is in Chinese though (气死我了!). I'm still trying to find someone to change it to English. In the meantime, I play Minesweeper.

  4. Hmm!!!!! TCL, 1.5Hrz, 516MB, 60G Hmmm!!!! 1.5 Hz only.... or 1.5 GHz ???? Juss kidding I know its typo.

    First things first:
Do following when you have a new toy like this:
    1) Partition the Hard Disk in 3 Sections like
C:\ Drive as the prime drive for installing you applications. I guess for you 10 GB for this partition should be suffice.
D:\ This drive can be say 20 GB to 30 GB as per your need and SHOULD only contains your data.... No music and movies. Only data means your work and imp things.
E:\ can hold all your stuff
Why to do this: So in case in future, if something goes wrong and if you happen to reinstall, you can just format C:\ drive keeping your data and stuff of D & E safe :)
    2) Download and install Mozilla firefox browser and STOP using Internet Explorer as it brings in lots of Ads and Tracking programs and have serious security loop holes.
So STOP using IE and start using mozilla(Well they are not paying me for canvassing their product :) )
    3) Download and install Ad Aware Personal and RUN it every single day just to see how much unwanted programs are there on your computer when you are hooked to internet.
    3) http://www.free-av.com/ Go in here and download the AntiVirus s/w personal free edition and install.
    4) Do not forget to switch on the Windows Default firewall. How to do it, Search on their website. :)
    5) In case of doubts: Always ask around and kee the system SAFE AND SECURE.

Little knowledge from my side although boring it is, but security is important and friends too.

    Sayonara!

  5. OMG! I really appreciate all of these and I'd like to follow everything that you just said but but but... I'm not sure how. See, I'm illiterate when it comes to computers and I panic when faced with all of these technical terms. And my internet connection for the laptop isn't working yet. Um, does it mean that when I first connect to the net, I should
    1. immediately download mozilla (which means I'll look for it on google and then download, which means I need to use Internet Explorer first),
    2. after downloading mozilla, I can now use it to connect to the net. Then I look for Ad Aware Personal (also via google) and download that too,
    3. then go to the url you provided and download something again?
    4. Where do I switch on the default firewall?
    Waaaaa!

  6. Or another option which is the BEST is:
Find out someone from your friend circle who is good in computers and show them this list and get things done and while doing this: Keep watching what is being done. Its SIMPLE and no need to panic when you or someone is tinkering around with the system and your lap top wont take last breath :) I know its your first time..... we all face our face times :) in every damn thing i mean :)

  8. sachya! where the f*ck did you get all these info? i'm sure they're very, very useful. now if only i understood even a fourth of what you wrote... (yes, computer illiteracy runs in the family. :D)

  9. Well, its kinda general knowledge. Simply speaking would you imagin your own house as only one HUGE room??? The same applies to computers too :)

Well, its has nothing to do with computer literacy, it has something to do with TINKERING AROUND attitude. So if you have computer of your own, start clicking things and try to see what happens. [Only thing dont do is:if you dont know what a particular thing does, then DO NOT DELETE if it is file and directory. Simple.]

And as you are writing and reading blogs, that means you are well literate in comps.

Here is something to go on:
    http://computer.howstuffworks.com/pc.htm

Dont LAUGH and think I am an idiot assuming you dont know about computers, but there are many things that WE all really dont know and we are not READY TO ACCEPT that we really dont know. :) Human mindset.

And about you understanding how to do things I listed in there : The proverb goes like this "You can not swim untill you jump into the water."

You will know and understand all of this only when you start tinkering around your computer :). It is not a ROCKET SICENCE and just apply your normal intelligence. If not confident, get someone who knows about it. Start with installing your OWN Windows operating system. best starting point.

BTW Joni, when you install a fresh copy of Operating System, then the installtion process guides you to create partitions like C, D and E. This is one way!

Another way is: Get a software called as Partition Magic which give you nice looking user interface to do this, however I never used it and getting a GOOD PIRATED copy is trick here. I wont recommend it.

    Happy?? More confused??

  10. More confused.

Ordinarily, I WOULD find someone good at computers and show him/her the list you gave me and have him/her worry about things. However, I'm in China. That means, if I show someone the list, that someone would most probably go, "看不懂 (I don't understand)," and will make things more complicated. I will try as hard as I can to follow your advice to the letter.

    Nick, hahahahaha!

  12. Hehe. Yung lumang laptop ko second-hand na Dell. Mukhang... di naman binugbog ng kalabaw pero tipong ayaw mong ilagay sa top ng lap mo dahil mamamanhid ang lap mo makaraan ang limang minuto. Sa bigat.

  14. Well! I read your confusions about the computers and people who tried to fix your problems. Here is what I have to suggest:
    1) Start your computer.
    2) Right Click "My Computer Icon" on desktop screen.
    3) Check the general tab which operating system and which service pack is installed.
My guess is: If you have IBM (Lenova) which is now called since it is being sold to chinese company, then it should have:
Windows xp home edition along with Service Pack 2 or SP2 so as to say.
Once you confirm this: Check out the CD's given to you when you purchased the computer.
    Find out these three CD's:
First Windows xp: Home edition which comes as a part of your computer
Second Driver Recovery CD's(There might be one or two cd's of this)
Third Application Recovery CD. Well this CD contains usually all applications that are installed on your computer when you purchased it. For ex: Minesweeper will be part of this CD if I am not wrong.

If you do not have these basic CD's :
ITS TIME TO START SCREAMING N DO SOME KICK ASS AROUND business. Start calling people who sold you this. You must get all these CD's as you have PAID pretty big money (6000 RMB is expensive, I paid that much almost 2 years back for my computer, so in two years prices should have been come down in my simple logic.)

Ifyou happen to find these CD's:
DO not rely on anyone much for fixing things out:
Simply, make sure that you do not have any IMPORTANT data on your new TOY and then YOU REINSTALL your own the fresh copy of Operating System.

Let me know if it makes sense to you. Then in that case I will tell you what you can do. But do this little investigation first.

At the end of this: Atleast you will know WHAT THE HECK is going on about your system.

    Happy LapToping!

    In case of computers:
"When going gets tough, either format and reinstall or Upgrade to better Operating System." :) Ha ha ha aha ha !!!!

  17. ........... *inggitz*............. (>_<) ang ganda.... i want one too..... is it cheaper there in china? u got it for less than 6000rmb? is that running on pentium centrino or celeron? aw... am so inggitera talaga....

    ReplyDelete
  18. V and mich, ok lang yan. Yup, got it for 5350RMB after much haggling. But you have to include transpo because I bought it from another city. Still less than 5500, I guess. I think it's cheaper here because it's a Chinese brand. Celeron, although there's a sticker that also says Centrino. Liars. But yeah, Celeron's fine.

  19. I'm jealous. I really want a Notebook computer. But I suppose I shouldn't complain. My desktop computer is pretty kick-ass.

  20. I'd been wanting to buy one for a long time but had to think long and hard about it. Since I'm in a foreign country, it is not advisable to buy a desktop as I will definitely be wandering about and I don't want to be lugging around an extra 5 or so kgs.
