"Kicking and Screaming" is about a group of just-graduated-from-college friends who sit around talking to each other about seemingly inessential things instead of living their lives. Or, as Chet puts it and I paraphrase, "This IS my life."
Six years out of college and I still feel that this movie is about my life (minus the sleeping with freshmen part). It just shows how far I've come since I got my undergrad diploma, huh?
It's angsty. It's witty. It's funny. It's depressing. I love it!
There's Grover, unable to move on after his girlfriend moved to Prague. There's surly Max who moans at his loss of identity. I don't remember the exact line but it's something like, "A few hours ago I was Max (forget the last name), a senior. English major. Now I'm just nothing." There's Otis, leaving for Milwaukee for his Master's but somehow always manages to put things off. And then there's Skippy who reenrolls for fear that he missed things while he was in school.
And I know this might be a spoiler to people who had never seen it but would want to, but the last scene is just too kilig not to mention.
"Grover: Ok, the way I see it, if we were an old couple, dated for years, graduated away from all these scholastic complications, and I reached over and kissed you, you wouldn't say a word, you'd be delighted, probably, but if I was to do that now it'd be quite forward, and if I did it the first time we ever met you probably would hit me.
Jane: What do you mean?
Grover: I just wish we were an old couple so I could do that."
Oh, and this was released in 1995. I was 15 in 1995. My angst was of a totally different nature at that age. No wonder I wasn't able to write it first.
Hmmm, seems like my kind of movie. I'll try to get hold of a copy.
ReplyDeleteThe quote above reminded me of a daydream I had while I was up on stage on graduation day and the MC was about to say: "Ladies and gentlemen, the 1999 newly graduates!". I couldn't help but hear in my head: "Ladies and gentlemen, the 1999 newly unemployed!" :P
Sounds interesting movie.. I am downloading now... the download speed sucks bigtime :(
ReplyDeletei love it already!!! bring it home so we can watch it together! :D
ReplyDeleteYou are so going to love it, Nuna. I'm definitely bringing it home. Hurray to piracy! :D People who want to borrow it may sign up here.
ReplyDeleteHand raised. Rip it and send it over!!
ReplyDeleteUm, I'm going to need help from you to do that...
ReplyDeleteOk. Hope the connection speed is good back home. Do you have broadband connection or good old Dial Up back home? Broadband will be best provided that there are no typhoons anymore.
ReplyDeleteYou know I won't be able to answer your questions. I have this cable that I connect to an outlet-like thing every time I go online but I don't have to dial anything. Does that mean I'm on broadband? I know that sounds silly but you know how stupid I am when it comes to these things.
ReplyDeleteWell, if you see a computer icon on your System Icon Tray(Extreme Bottom Right Hand side of your screen), then just move your mouse over there and then you can read connection spee of your internet. If that is something like 2mbps or more then that should be broadband connection. BTW, your questions are never SILLY to me. When it boils down to Literature I can qualify and take away nobel prize for stupidity. hehehe!!
ReplyDeleteIt says 400.0 Mbps... Is that for real?
ReplyDeleteJesus christ. No, it must be a swicth/router, a device used to make use of single internet connection in multiple places as per as my little knowledge. So, if you could rip the DVD in China itself, then we can start xfer and get it done faster. :) What you say?
ReplyDeleteIf it is 400mbps for real then you should be able to download a 700 MB movie in 15 mins or less than that. Is that the case??
Sachin, I think I can only rip from audio CDs.
ReplyDeleteNuna, you might be interested to know that Chris Eigeman, the guy who plays Max, also appears in Gilmore Girls as Jason Stiles. Now who is Jason Stiles?

ReplyDeleteA quick tutorial to Rip Audio and Video DVDs FYI.
jason stiles, aka digger, is richard's partner's son who later became his partner. jason and lorelei were childhood friends. they meet again one friday dinner and they begin seeing each other secretly (secretly from her parents anyway). they break up eventually because of business chu chu conflicts between jason and lorelei's dad. this was before she began dating luke.
ReplyDeleteOh! Oh! I remember!
ReplyDeleteyou just needed a nudge, that's all. :p
ReplyDeleteI just didn't know the names of the characters.
ReplyDeleteIt's still very difficult for me. I was faced with all these instructions and I panic and I can't do it. They're all Greek to me. I will need a one-step-at-a-time kind of instructions for me to be able to do it. And my ad-aware detected a virus that it can't get rid of. I think. So I'll need your help on that too. Uh, thanks. :D
ReplyDeletejust found out this entry, hmmm, sounds like a good movie for my senior students.:-) I'll need to search it in some DVD stores then. Thanks!
