Life with Athletes

Being around athletes 24/7 made me notice that athletes have a certain walk. Male athletes, at least. It's like their arms are too long, or their shoulders too wide so their arms fall in a unique way. I'd always found something weird with the way athletes swing their arms while walking even before I came here but I thought this was just particular to basketball/volleyball players. Now I've made the conclusion that there is, what I would now term as, an athlete's walk.

Everyday at 4 in the afternoon, the players work out at the gym inside the compound. I've been meaning to go with them. I've even worked out a schedule in my mind. But as usual, the bed seems much more inviting than the treadmill.

Everyone always comments on how little I eat. Come on, I sit in front of the computer and laze in bed the whole day reading or sleeping. How can I even compare to them athletes? For the record, I think I have a big appetite which is somewhat hindered by the use of chopsticks. I always forget to bring my spoon and fork to the cafeteria. I'll bring them tonight and eat a lot. Hmp.

Another thing that being in close proximity with the team members entails is getting to know behind-the-scene controversies within the team. I'm now privy to a love triangle currently going on under my nose and I'm only too happy to observe the soap operatic plot. No I won't be writing about it. At least not until I have more details. :p

I've started working on my thesis again. This is good news. Somehow, the knowledge of the deadline looming over me is enough to scare me into writing. As much as I miss school, I do not want to take refresher courses which is what I'll have to do if I miss my deadline.

And now off to bed for my afternoon nap...

  5. Hahahaha! Not brokeback at all. There are men's and women's teams. If it gets that dramatic, I will definitely write about it. :p And I don't think I can take a video of them walking. Too weird. Just watch any of our local athletes walk. It's the same.

  6. yes ms.! i've realized that also ever since i was a kid like around 13 years of age. i thought only swimmers that i grew up with and have observed throughout a couple of years had that kind of weird way walking but actually all people that have dedicated almost their entire life develops certain unintentional ways and action. observe athletes from other events also ms.! its fun! hehe! :)
you're in china right? my oh my, they develop good players over there. but training is really rigid and tiring but in the long run, every ounce of sweat pays off for them. :)

  7. you know, "the walk" could simply be that all their training gives them broader, more muscular chests? which affects the way they swing their arms? I seem to remember this from when I took a life drawing class, and we were analyzing human anatomy for figure drawing.

  8. True. Must be the broad chest and shoulders. I just find it fascinating to watch. The walk, I mean. I'll get used to it then it'll stop being weird.

Yes, Aizza, I'm in China. When are you coming to visit me?

  9. They'd definitely think I'm a major weirdo if I start taking videos of them walking! I'll see what I can do...

  12. Beijing. But we're going to Shanghai at the end of the month and stay there for two months. Then we're coming back to Beijing for a few days, then fly to Qatar for the Asian Games, then I don't know what's next. Possibly Guangzhou in winter. We definitely have to meet up when you come here. And I hope I'll still be working for the team by that time so I can introduce the cute guys to you. Hehehe!

  15. Sige, Aizza. Balitaan kita kung siguradong sigurado na. As in may visa na ko't lahat. Kaw din, update me.

Achi Janice, I can't help it. I'm weak...

  16. Aha! so you're coming here in Qatar for the 15th Asian Games...hintayin kita dito ha...;-)

  17. Sige ba! Some of the coaching staff are going there on the 10th. I'm not sure if there's going to be a meeting or orientation or whatever. The assistant team manager was just talking to me last night. He's worried that he might not be able to understand Qatar (is it Qatarian? :p) English. The coaches will be relying on him for the translations as he's the only one with passable English proficiency.

  18. Maybe they will be here for some sort of familiarization in relation to deployment of athletes, say with the protocols, logistics, etc. Actually all the sports stadiums here are almost done as well as the Athlete's Village. Relay to your asst. team mgr not to worry in communicating with the Qatari/Qataris whom they will meet because these are mostly educated in US & UK and they speak good english. BTW, i am a Volunteer in the ASIAN Games and will be assigned in the media services hopefully as photo assistant...challenging...imagine supervising photographers' position on the field of play...in short taga-marshal...hehehe!!!
So once u'r here, to whom are u going to cheer? Chinese team or kay Kabayan?

  19. He's worried that his English isn't good enough. I think he'll be even more anxious if I tell him that most of the people he'll be talking to are US or UK educated. Hahaha, exciting! Controlling the crazy photographers!

I'll be cheering for both teams, I guess. :p

  20. You speak chinese, right? try to convince them na isama ka na on the 10th....you will take charge of the translations.;-)

Marami din ditong chinese na babae, madalas makikita mo sila sa mga shopping malls and hotels at naiiba ang bizness nila...unfortunately, sila ung mga niri-raid sa mga casa at dini-deport ng Immigration...u know wat i mean...

  21. Uh oh. He probably won't be too happy to hear about those girls. I'll just let him find out for himself. Hehehe. No, I can't go with them yet. My Chinese visa hasn't been fixed. I'm currently on a no-entry visa, so if I leave China now, I won't be able to come back. Complicated stuff. I think he'll do alright anyway. I'm sure he'll find a way to get himself understood even when he runs out of words. And that's something everyone should experience. :p

  26. It's in Portuguese! I could try and read it and see if I can piece together what it's all about but I will need time. Lots and lots of time. But thanks, anyway. I still promise to read it.
